As the leaves begin their magic dance and turn to fiery shades of orange and gold, it’s time to embrace the cozy!
This is the season that I relish in the beauty of nature, enjoy the warmth of home-cooked meals, and create a space that wraps us in comfort. One of my biggest jobs besides wife and mother, is homemaking.
Curating our home to ensure that its a space we love and feel at home in, takes time and effort. So, grab a cup of apple cider, put on your favorite sweater, and let’s dive into some delightful tips for crafting a relaxing, cottage-core-inspired home this fall.
Create Warmth with Seasonal Colors
So what is cottagecore anyway? To me, its the feeling of home. The one that you create. the home that gives you those cozy vibes. You could ask 100 people and I believe you would be 100 different answers. To me, cottagecore and fall are synonymous.
One of the quickest ways to capture the essence of autumn is by bringing in seasonal colors. Warm, earthy burnt oranges, deep reds, and mustard yellows can instantly give you a sense of coziness. Start small by swapping out your throw pillows and blankets for ones in these inviting shades.
You can also consider painting an accent wall in a rich, autumnal hue to create a focal point in your room. If painting sounds like too much of a commitment, how about adding some decorative items like vintage vases, cozy rugs, or a few pumpkins? These little touches can make a big difference and help tie the whole room together.
Think beyond just the living room, too. Adding these colors to your dining area with tablecloths, napkins, or even a beautiful centerpiece can create a warm and inviting atmosphere for family dinners and gatherings.
Don’t forget about the power of curtains and drapes! Switching to heavier, warm-colored curtains can not only keep the chill out but also add a layer of autumnal charm to your windows. By thoughtfully incorporating these seasonal colors, you’ll create a space that feels warm, welcoming, and perfectly in tune with the autumn vibes outside.
Incorporate Natural Elements
Bringing the beauty of the outdoors inside is a hallmark of cottagecore, especially during the autumn season.
Start by collecting natural elements from your own backyard or nearby nature walks. Think pinecones, acorns, colorful leaves, and branches. These can be artfully displayed in glass jars, woven baskets, or scattered on a mantelpiece to create a natural, rustic look.
Consider using dried flowers and grasses too. Hang bunches of dried lavender, wheat, or eucalyptus in your kitchen or hallway to introduce both visual interest and lovely aromas. You could even create a stunning dried flower arrangement as a centerpiece for your dining table.
Another idea is to incorporate wood elements. A wooden tray filled with seasonal fruits, a reclaimed wood coffee table, or even a few carefully placed wooden coasters can add warmth and texture to your home.
These elements bring in that earthy, grounded feel that’s so integral to cottagecore. For a functional and decorative touch, use woven baskets or wooden crates to store blankets, firewood, or even your favorite books. These storage solutions not only look charming but also add to the cozy atmosphere, and who couldn’t use the extra storage.
Incorporating these natural elements helps bridge the gap between the indoors and outdoors, bringing a slice of autumn’s splendor right into your home.
Create a Cozy Reading Nook
There’s nothing quite like losing yourself in a good book while wrapped in the comfort of your own cozy reading nook, especially on a crisp autumn day.
First, find a quiet corner in your home that feels inviting and secluded.
Choose a comfy chair or even a small loveseat that beckons you to sit down and relax. Drape it with a warm blanket and add a few plush pillows for extra comfort.
Next, consider the lighting. Soft, warm lighting is key to creating that perfect reading ambiance. A floor lamp with an adjustable arm or a table lamp with a soft shade can provide the gentle illumination you need without being too harsh on the eyes. Adding a string of fairy lights or a candle nearby is also an option.
Don’t forget a small side table where you can easily place your cup of tea, coffee, or pumpkin spice latte, if that’s your thing. This makes your reading nook not just a place for books, but a true haven of relaxation.
Shelving or a small bookshelf nearby can store your favorite reads, making them easily accessible. Arrange your books creatively, mixing in a few decorative items like small potted plants, framed photos, or charming knick-knacks to add a touch of personality.
A small rug underfoot can complete the space, adding an extra layer of warmth and making it even more inviting. Opt for a thick, plush rug that feels good under your feet.
Now, all that’s left is to grab your favorite book and get lost in its pages.
Add Layers of Comfort with Textiles
Textiles are your best friends when it comes to creating a cozy sanctuary. Think soft, warm, and inviting layers that beckon you to relax and unwind.
Start with your furniture: drape chunky knit blankets over your sofa or armchair, and scatter some flannel throws for that extra touch of warmth. Don’t shy away from mixing textures—combine velvet cushions with woolen throws and linen pillows to create a rich, tactile experience.
Pay attention to the fabrics you choose. Opt for natural materials like cotton, wool, and linen, which not only feel good but also add to the overall aesthetic. Quilts are another wonderful addition; they bring an old-world charm that’s quintessential to the cottagecore vibe. Whether they’re draped over a chair or neatly folded at the foot of your bed, quilts add a comforting layer of nostalgia and warmth.
When it comes to rugs, go for something thick and plush. A well-placed rug can instantly transform a cold floor into a cozy, inviting space. Consider patterns and colors that echo the autumn season—think plaids, earthy tones, or even a rustic floral design. These will help tie your room together and reinforce that snug, welcoming atmosphere.
Curtains can also play a significant role. Heavier fabrics like velvet or thick cotton can add both warmth and privacy, making your home feel warm. Choose warm, muted colors that harmonize with your overall decor.
And let’s not forget about the dining area. A soft tablecloth, some linen napkins, and a few fabric placemats can make family meals feel special and intimate. Textiles are a simple yet powerful way to add layers of comfort and turn your home into that perfect countryside cottage, even in the middle of the city.
Use Vintage Finds to Bring Character
There’s something magical about vintage finds that adds an extra layer of character. Scouring thrift shops, flea markets, or even online marketplaces can yield hidden treasures that make your home uniquely yours.
Imagine a vintage quilt draped over the arm of your favorite chair or an antique clock gracing your mantel, each piece telling its own story and adding to the cozy, lived-in feel that’s so central to the cottagecore aesthetic.
Start small if you’re new to the vintage hunt. Look for items that speak to you—perhaps a set of mismatched, hand-painted teacups for your afternoon tea or a rustic wooden crate to store your collection of autumn reads. Even something as simple as a weathered picture frame can add a touch of nostalgia and charm to your space.
Search for old-fashioned tablecloths, lace doilies, or embroidered pillows that evoke a sense of history and craftsmanship. These can be effortlessly mixed with your existing decor to create an inviting, eclectic vibe.
Don’t overlook the kitchen either! Vintage cookware like cast iron skillets, copper pots, or old ceramic bowls can add both functionality and aesthetic appeal. Display them on open shelves or hang them from hooks to make them part of your decor. The warmth of these aged pieces adds to the overall cozy ambiance and makes everyday tasks feel a bit more special.
If you can find it, think about incorporating vintage lighting. A beautifully aged lamp or a set of old-fashioned candleholders can cast a warm, inviting glow, perfect for those crisp autumn evenings. These unique finds bring a richness to your home that’s hard to replicate with new, mass-produced items.
Cook Hearty, Seasonal Meals
Autumn is the perfect time to dive into hearty cooking, filling your home with the comforting scents and flavors of the season. I am such a big fan of cooking healthy, locally sourced meals for our family.
Begin by exploring local farmers’ markets for fresh, seasonal produce like pumpkins, squash, apples, and root vegetables. These ingredients are perfect for creating warming soups, stews, and roasted vegetable dishes that nourish both the body and soul. Imagine a steaming pot of butternut squash soup simmering on the stove, or a tray of spiced roasted carrots and parsnips fresh out of the oven—simple, yet utterly satisfying.
Don’t forget about the magic of baking! Whip up a batch of apple cinnamon muffins, or try your hand at baking a classic pumpkin pie. The aromas alone will wrap your home in a blanket of coziness.
If you’re feeling adventurous, why not make homemade bread? There’s nothing quite like the smell of fresh bread baking on a crisp autumn day, and it pairs wonderfully with hearty soups and stews.
Incorporate seasonal herbs like rosemary, sage, and thyme to enhance the flavors of your dishes. A roast chicken infused with these herbs can become a Sunday dinner favorite, providing both comfort and nourishment.
And don’t be afraid to get the whole family involved. Cooking together not only makes meal preparation more fun but also creates cherished memories that embody the spirit of autumn.
If you need ideas, I have several of our family’s favorites under the recipe tab!
Light (clean) Candles
Candles are a quintessential element for infusing your home with a cozy autumn ambiance.
Finding clean scented candles can be tough. I’ve been getting ours from the online wellness store that we use for over a year now! Imagine the delightful aroma of pumpkin spice, cinnamon, or apple cider wafting through your rooms.
Strategically place them around your home to create a warm, inviting glow. Think about lining your windowsills, adorning your dining table, or enhancing the comfort of your reading nook.
For an added touch of rustic charm, consider using candle holders made from natural materials like wood, metal, or even repurposed vintage finds. Lanterns and mason jars can also make excellent, atmospheric choices. If you have little ones at home, it might be safer to consider flameless LED candles that provide the same warm glow without the worry of an open flame. You can add the scent through a diffuser with oils to get the same experience.
To elevate the sensory experience, mix and match different sizes and heights. Grouping candles together can create a captivating centerpiece that draws the eye and warms the soul. A small tray with a few candles, paired with some dried flowers or pinecones, can instantly transform any space.
Don’t forget about outdoor spaces! Placing a few candles on your porch or patio can create a magical evening atmosphere, perfect for those crisp autumn nights spent under the stars.
Incorporate Autumnal Wreaths and Garlands
Nothing says “welcome” like a beautifully crafted autumnal wreath adorning your front door. Using materials like leaves, berries, pinecones, and even small pumpkins, you can create a wreath that bursts with the colors and textures of the season.
Whether you choose to buy one or get creative and make your own, a wreath instantly adds a touch of autumnal charm to your entryway.
Garlands are another fantastic way to bring the essence of fall into your home. Drape them along your mantel, wind them around your staircase banister, or even frame your windows with them. You can find pre-made garlands at most craft stores, but making your own can be a fun, family-friendly activity. Use a mix of faux and real elements like dried orange slices, cinnamon sticks, and twine for a more rustic, homemade feel.
For a twist, try incorporating elements that reflect your personal style. If you love the farmhouse look, consider using burlap ribbons and wooden beads. If vintage is more your vibe, lace and antique buttons can add a unique touch. The beauty of wreaths and garlands is their versatility—you can customize them to fit any space or aesthetic.
By incorporating these charming decorations, you’ll create a warm, inviting atmosphere that captures the very essence of the autumn season.
Grow and Harvest Autumn Herbs
If you have a bit of space, growing your own autumn herbs can be a delightful addition to your home. Herbs like sage, rosemary, and thyme are perfect for the cooler months and can transform your cooking.
Imagine stepping outside to snip a sprig of rosemary for your roast chicken or a few leaves of sage for your butternut squash soup. Its one of my favorite things about cooking from scratch.
Creating a small herb garden, whether in your backyard, on a windowsill, or even in pots on your kitchen counter, is both practical and charming. The act of tending to your plants can be incredibly rewarding and offers a moment of peace in your busy day. Plus, the sight and scent of fresh herbs can add a lovely touch to your autumn decor.
Consider drying some of your herbs to use throughout the season. Hang small bundles upside down in a cool, dry place until they’re fully dried. Not only will this give you a stock of herbs for your cooking, but it also makes for a beautiful, aromatic display. There are sprigs of basil hanging in my kitchen window as I write this and the smell is amazing!
Whether you’re an experienced gardener or a complete novice, growing and harvesting autumn herbs is a wonderful way to bring a bit of nature’s bounty into your home.
Practice Slow Living and Mindfulness
This is probably the most important tip I can give you.
SLOW DOWN.
Embrace the serene pace of autumn by practicing slow living and mindfulness. Begin your day with a few moments of quiet reflection, perhaps with a cup of herbal tea in hand. Allow yourself to be present in the moment, appreciating the simple beauty around you—whether it’s the changing leaves outside your window or the comforting aroma of a home-cooked meal.
Incorporate mindfulness into your daily routine with activities like journaling, gentle yoga, or even a peaceful walk through your garden. These small acts can cultivate a sense of calm and gratitude, enriching your connection to your surroundings.
Dedicate time to unplug from the digital world and immerse yourself in analog pleasures like reading a book, knitting, or baking. Engaging in these hands-on activities can ground you and provide a soothing counterbalance to the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
This tip isn’t exactly for your home, but it will help you enjoy the space you have taken time to create. By integrating slow living and mindfulness into your autumn routine, you ensure you are rejuvenating and nourishing your soul.
Happy Fall,
Kaylene
